Barack Obama
Barack Hussein Obama, Jr. was born on August 4, 1961 in Honolulu, Hawaii. Barack Obama is a very important figure, but not only in Black History Month, but everywhere nowadays. Barack Obama is the Junior Senator of Illinois, and he is a candidate for the Democratic nomination in the 2008 Presidential Election. I think that he is a great candidate, and he has a possibility of becoming the Presidential candidate and the next president of the United States. He has many supporters, including his family and is currently in the lead for the Democratic race.
Barack Obama’s father, Barack Hussein Obama, Sr., was from Kenya, and his mother, Ann Dunham, was from Witchita, Kansas. Barack Obama was known as “Barry”. His parents separated when he was at least 2 years of age, and they later divorced. Barack Obama Sr. attended Harvard University to continue his Ph.D studies. Obama Sr. returned to his hometown of Kenya, and he died shortly after the car accident he had in 1982. Then, his mother married another foreign student, Lolo Soetoro. When they got married, Barack Obama’s family moved to Indonesia, which was Lolo’s hometown. He attended local schools from ages 6 to 10 in Jakarta. His classes were taught in Indonesian. Barack Obama returned to his hometown of Honolulu, Hawaii to live with his grandparents, while he went to Punahou School from the 5th grade until his graduation in 1979. Ann Dunham, Obama’s mother, died of ovarian cancer and uterine cancer. He got his accent from his mother. In 1995, the release of his first memoir, which was, Dreams from My Father, was released a few months before the death of his mother. In his memoir, he wrote that he used alcohol, marijuana, and cocaine during his teenage years, so that he could push questions of who he is out of his mind.
After high school, he moved to Los Angeles, California, where he attended Occidental College for 2 years. Later on, he transferred to Columbia University in New York City, where he majored in political science. He received his Bachelor of Arts in 1983. He worked at the Business International Corporation and at the New York Public Interest Research Group. He worked in New York, and then he moved to Chicago to take a job as a community organizer. He attended Harvard Law School in 1988. He completed his J.D. degree magna cum laude in 1991. He was elected to the Illinois Senate in 1996 from the 13th District. In 2003, Obama began his run for the U.S. Senate open seat, which was vacated by Peter Fitzgerald. Jack Ryan dropped out of the race in June 2004. Alan Keyes replaced Ryan and accepted the Illinois Republican Party’s nomination. Obama and Keyes expressed their opposing views on stem cell research, abortion, gun control, school vouchers, and tax cuts. In the November 2004 general election, Keyes received 27%, but Obama received 70% of the vote, which was the largest electoral victory in Illinois history.
Since he is part of the Senate and is the Senator of Illinois, he visited Russia, Ukraine, Kenya, Africa, and Eastern Europe, and many other countries. In February 2007, Barack Obama announced his candidacy for the 2008 U.S. presidential election in Springfield, Illinois. His campaign raised $58 million during the first half of 2007. In the first month of 2008, his campaign brought in $36.8 million, which was the highest ever raised in a month by a presidential candidate in the Democratic primaries. For Obama’s own protection, the U.S. government assigned Secret Service protection to Obama for 18 months before the general election. He married Michelle Robinson in October 1992. Their first daughter, Malia Ann, was born in 1998. Then, came their second daughter, Natasha, who is also called Sasha, who was born in 2001. His $2 million book deal paid off his family’s debts in 2005. He plays basketball, and he is also left-handed. Before he announced his presidential candidacy, he began to make an effort to quit smoking and says he has never been a heavy smoker. Obama said that his hidden talent was that he is a pretty good poker player. He wrote his second book, The Audacity of Hope, in Ch. 6, he describes his Kenyan father “raised a Muslim”. He joined the Trinity United Church of Christ in 1988.
I chose Barack Obama because I think that he can really change America, if he is elected to become president. I think he is really speaking from his heart. I think that he is the first candidate that is speaking the truth, unlike other presidents that lied to win. I think he is very serious and believes that we can change America. If he’s a good Senator, then he could be a great President. Hopefully, he will win the Democratic race for the candidacy of the 2008 presidential election against Hillary Clinton. I hope he’ll win the 2008 Presidential Election, if he is elected to be a candidate for the Presidential election.
Barack Obama has an interesting life. He believes we can change America. At many of his speeches, people have shouted, “We want change!” or “Yes we can!” He really believes that there can be a change made in America. I really do hope he’ll become the next President. He was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, and today, he is in America to try to make a difference in America. I think he will become our next President and make our lives better.
